Living on the Cloud
by Paco on Apr.03, 2010, under Uncategorized
I’ve been trying lately to move a lot of my information to the cloud. While some people think that is silly or a bad idea, I tend to disagree.
Some of the reasons for moving to the cloud are :
- Digitized information that is easy to keep track of and organize.
- Easy access to all information from computer, smartphone and at work.
- I can update information from anywhere.
- Can backup easy without worrying about to much clutter.
- I can sync my Facebook, Outlook, and Phone contacts easily.
- And I can make public what I want.
I’ve been using Google for most of this. I’ve moved to Gmail about a year ago from Yahoo because of the free POP and IMAP options, but now I’ve moved my calendar to Google Calendar. I’m using Remember the Milk for my to-do lists, and Evernote for note taking.
For most of them the browser interface is the best and is easy to use. The one exception to this is Evernote. I usually need notes quicker then the browser can load it. So I’ve downloaded an Evernote program and just use that to sync with my account.
My one complaint right now is Evernote and Verizon. Verizon has removed the Evernote Blackberry app and I’m unable to access my notes from my phone. But at this point, I’m not away from a computer long enough to worry to much about it. But, obviously things can change rapidly.
I have also been collecting all the business cards I’ve collected over the years and manually adding them to my Gmail contacts. This is nice, because I don’t have to keep track of those little pieces of paper/cardboard, and I also have access to them on my phone once it has been synced.
The Facebook side of this is that my Blackberry can grab the contact information from my FB friends and put it on my phone. Then my phone will sync with my Gmail contacts and I now have people emails, phone number (if available), and a picture of people.
Its all a sync cloud happiness.
This all brings up some interesting privacy conversation, but that sounds like another post.
Scott out.

Leave a Comment more...Career Change Day 1
by Paco on Sep.22, 2009, under Uncategorized
For awhile now I’ve been looking for a job, like a lot of people in the United States. I have decided to make a quantum leap, and go for a dream job. I plan on telling you about that over the next couple of days. But first some back story.
Two days after the Presidential Election, I was pulled into the conference room and told that they were letting me go. It was a combination of little work and the economy. I accepted this because I wasn’t real crazy about the job to begin with and was looking for a job somewhere else. I shortly after got a temporary job with another engineering firm that would hold me over until I left for some scheduled military training in February. I again, didn’t like the job much and committed myself to finding something else.
Well I have since finished my military training and commenced to looking for a job. I have looked and applied online too many jobs with little to no success. I’ve had a few interviews, but nothing has come about. So I pulled a book that I got for Christmas off the shelf and started reading it again. The book, What Color Is your Parachute 2009. This book is supposed to be the best book on the market to help you find a job. I read it back in December, but didn’t really go through the exercises and put a ton of effort into the book. Well now, after I’ve tried to find a job with no luck, I need to make some drastic changes.
I have reread the book and am going through the exercises the book proscribes. I would like to publish these findings here, so that the world can see them and comment on them. I will probably post multiple exercises per day because the quicker I can get this done the faster I can recreate my resume and start looking for my dream job.
Here is my first exercise, title Who Am I.
“Most job-hunters who fail to find their dream job, fail not because they lack information about the job market, but because they lack information about themselves.” – What Color Is your Parachute 2009 Pg 186.
- Take ten sheets of blank paper. Write at the top of each one, the words: Who Am I?
- Then write on each sheet in turn, one answer to that question. And only One.
- When you’re done, go back over all ten sheets and expand upon what you have written on each sheet. Looking at each answer, write below it, why you said that, and what turns you on about the answer.
- Go back over all the sheets; order them in priority which is the most important to you. Most important on the top.
- Finally look at all the answers to what turns me on about this, and see what’s in common. Put these down on a separate piece of paper.
Here is mine:
Who Am I?
- An engineer
- A Leader
- A Problem solver
- A soldier
- A tinkerer
- A Dreamer
- A Student
- A trier of new things
- An Adventurer
- An outdoorsmen
What turns me on?
- Knowing how and why things work
- Knowing the science be how and why things work
- Knowing the technology behind how things work
- Creating solutions for people and their problems
- Fixing and making things better
- Looking toward the future for solutions and problems
- Testing new things and gadgets
- Discipline and structure
Me in a Nutshell (Something I did for me, not part of the book exercise)
I like to know how and why things work. I like to know what the science and technology behind how and why things work. I like to take that knowledge and solve people’s problems. I know that most of the time there is a technology or gadget out there that can solve these problems. I love to test and use new products, to again understand how and why they work. I need discipline and structure to function well, and being outside is a plus.
While I am not sure this exercise helped me a ton, it gives me a little better idea of who I am, and by putting this down on paper can help me get some focus.
